Glasgow School Of Art was founded in January 1845. When Francis Newbery became principal in 1885 under his direction the School expanded so considerably that a larger building was required. In 1896, a design competition took place for the building of a new Glasgow School of Art on a site offered to its directors by the Bellahouston trustees. With a budget of just £14,000, architects Honeyman and Keppie submitted a design from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of their junior draughtsmen. Sympathetic to Mackintosh's vision, the design was praised by Newbery and after independent assessment by the education authorities in London, was finally accepted.
